Beginning small
by Alwyn Marriage
Greta
An acorn fell
on Swedish soil
shyly accepted
the discomfort
of sun and rain,
the risk of ruin.
Daring to be open,
twisting to break free
of tangled roots,
the acorn turned to see
more saplings sprouting
all over the forest floor.
No one can
predict the future,
but there's always hope
that acorns will grow
into mighty oaks
that might save us all.
Alwyn Marriage's eleven published books include poetry, fiction and non-fiction, but her major focus is on poetry. Her work is very widely published in magazines, anthologies and on-line and she gives regular readings all over Britain and in many other countries (in non-covid times!).
